Gürbüz graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Law. After working as a lawyer for a while, he abandoned his profession and began pursuing music. He has been pursuing music professionally since 1974. In addition to his music career, Gürbüz also worked as a theater actor for ten years. Later, as music became more dominant, he shifted his focus entirely to music, creating not only his albums but also film scores. For many years, a sought-after figure at solidarity nights and concerts, Sadık Gürbüz has carved out a place for himself in the music world through both his folk songs and his finest work.
The fact that the first step in Sadık Gürbüz’s musical journey was his finest interpretations of Pir Sultan Abdal’s poems demonstrates that his poetry is his foundation. However, his distribution of the best forms of these poems clearly demonstrates that folk songs are a secondary source in the country. With both the best poems and the poems recited within these compositions, Sadık Gürbüz is an artist who has successfully conveyed the poems, the very essence of which he captures, to the listener.
The most striking characteristics of Sadık Gürbüz’s albums are their westernized arrangements. In this context, the methods employed in both his best works and the folk songs he performs are the guiding forces of many artists. In an era where the “conservative” principle of performing folk songs with a single instrument persists, Sadık Gürbüz is a performer who dares to utilize a variety of instruments, from piano and flute to bass guitar and kaval (a traditional Turkish instrument) and violin, both in his albums and in his compositions. Despite this modern foundation, Gürbüz never strays from performing folk songs as if they were folk songs.
